THE KILLING OF ST STANISLAUS

The Killing of St Stanislaus

The conflict between King Boleslaus the Generous (aka Bold) and Bishop of  Krakow Stanisław of Szczepanów, which led to the shedding of the latter’s blood, plays an important role in the Polish national and religious tradition. According to some sources, King Boleslaus killed Bishop Stanislaus on the steps of the altar of the Church “on the Rock” in Krakow. Why it came to this, and what really happened, are questions we try to answer in a film about the events of 11 April 1079.

Jan Matejko’s The Killing of St Stanislaus is on display in the Museum of Central Pomerania in Słupsk.
