STEFAN BATORY AT PSKOV

STEFAN BATORY AT PSKOV

In January 1582, King Stefan Batory ended his third campaign against the Muscovite state. Tsar Ivan the Terrible sued for peace, returning captured territory in Livonia to Poland and agreeing to a truce in exchange for Batory abandoning his siege of Pskov. Jan Matejko’s 1872 painting presents a delegation of boyars suing for peace with King Stefan Batory. In fact, the king was not at Pskov at that time; the truce was agreed in a completely different place, but in his work Matejko presents a synthesis of the wars with Muscovy that were concluded by the peace of 1582. The film describes these events and the main characters involved.

Jan Matejko’s painting Stefan Batory at Pskov is on display at the Royal Castle in Warsaw.
